Chief Justice Martha Koome has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a patriot whose love for Kenya went beyond politics.
In a heartfelt message of condolence, Koome said she received the news of Raila’s passing with “profound sorrow and deep sadness,” noting that Kenya had lost one of its most consequential leaders.
“Kenya has lost a statesman whose name is forever etched in the annals of our democratic journey,” she said.
Koome extended condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, and all Kenyans.
“We share in your grief and join the nation in mourning the loss of one of Kenya’s most enigmatic and consequential leaders,” she said.
The Chief Justice described Raila as a towering figure who stood at “the confluence of history and destiny,” and whose courage, sacrifice, and conviction held together the fragile threads of Kenya’s democracy.
“Throughout his illustrious life of public service, the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga embodied the spirit of resilience and the audacity of hope,” Koome said, adding that his unyielding struggle for political freedom and justice transformed Kenya’s political landscape.
She credited Raila with expanding the frontiers of democratic participation and anchoring “the principles of equality and accountability that underpin our governance today.”
Koome praised the late leader’s commitment to inclusive leadership and his consistent support for women’s empowerment, saying he was “a true believer in inclusive leadership.”
“He consistently championed the recognition of women as equal partners in shaping Kenya’s political destiny, ensuring that women were visible, empowered, and supported as leaders and decision-makers in our national life,” the Chief Justice said.
She also hailed Raila’s contributions to the rule of law, judicial independence, and constitutionalism, noting that these principles “enriched our national discourse and inspired democratic movements across Africa.”
Koome described Raila’s life as one defined by courage in adversity, dialogue over division, and hope over despair. “His life’s work calls upon every Kenyan to remain vigilant in defending the freedoms for which he so tirelessly fought,” she said.
The Chief Justice urged Kenyans to carry forward Raila’s vision of unity, equality, and justice. “We celebrate his enduring legacy of courage in adversity, dialogue over division, and hope over despair,” she said.
She added that his dream of a just and free nation should continue to guide future generations.
“May his family and all Kenyans find comfort in the knowledge that his life’s mission was not in vain. His dream of a just, free, and united Kenya will continue to guide generations to come.”
“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
