The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
Youssouf lauded Raila as a "distinguished statesman of the African continent."
In an official message of condolence, Youssouf said he had learned of Raila’s death "with profound sadness," and extended heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the African Union, its organs and institutions.
“Raila Odinga was a towering figure in Kenya’s political life and a steadfast champion of democracy, good governance, and people-centred development. His decades-long commitment to justice, pluralism, and democratic reform left an indelible mark not only on Kenya but across the African continent. He inspired generations of leaders, including myself, and citizens alike through his courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in the power of dialogue and democratic institutions,” Youssouf said.
Raila, a central figure in Kenyan politics for over four decades, served in numerous capacities, including as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and even as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.
“Odinga’s contributions extended far beyond national borders. As the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, he worked tirelessly to advance the continent’s integration and connectivity agenda, helping to lay the foundations for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader socio-economic transformation,” Youssouf added.
Describing Raila as one of Africa’s most "visionary sons," Youssouf said the former Prime Minister dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity.
“Africa has lost one of its most visionary sons; a leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity,” Youssouf said, noting that his legacy would endure across generations.
“The African Union joins the Government and people of Kenya, and the entire continent, in celebrating the life, service, and enduring legacy of Raila Amolo Odinga. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Youssouf said.
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) also sent a message of condolences, terming Raila as one of Africa’s iconic sons.
IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu said Raila was an unwavering Pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the pursuit of democracy, justice, and unity.
He said Raila’s lifelong struggle for freedom and equality
inspired generations across Kenya and beyond, reminding many that leadership is
not about power, but about service and sacrifice.
“IGAD stands with the people and Government of Kenya in this moment of profound sorrow. His legacy will forever echo in the democratic foundations he helped build and in the enduring hope he instilled across our continent.”
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his example continue to guide us toward a freer and more united Africa.”
