President William Ruto has reaffirmed the Kenya Defence Forces’ central role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and driving development.
Describing the military as the “living shield of our Republic and the pillar of our prosperity,” Ruto praised the soldiers for their courage, professionalism, and patriotism.
Speaking Tuesay when he led the nation in honouring the Kenya Defence Forces during the KDF Day celebrations at Moi Barracks in Eldoret, the President said the event was a moment of deep national pride and reflection on the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform.
“The true heart of our national defence lies not in our weapons or technology, but in the courage, welfare, and unwavering readiness of the Kenyan soldier,” Ruto said.
He outlined four key government priorities aimed at strengthening the Defence Forces, improving soldier welfare and family support, investing in training and professional development, modernising equipment and technology, and enhancing psychological and spiritual resilience.
“When a soldier knows that his family is safe and supported, he serves with sharper focus and unshakable resolve,” the President said.
This, while highlighting ongoing housing and healthcare projects in military bases across the country.
Ruto also celebrated the KDF’s broader contributions to national development, citing their role in infrastructure projects, disaster response, and peace missions.
“The fingerprints of the KDF are everywhere, from roads and hospitals to peace restoration efforts in the North Rift,” he said.
The celebrations were held under the theme “Enhancing a Soldier-Centric Approach Towards Mission Readiness for National Security and Development”.
He lauded the soldiers for their role in humanitarian and environmental initiatives, including disaster relief, medical outreach, and tree planting, saying such efforts strengthen Kenya’s resilience and national unity.
The President pledged continued investment in defence modernisation, enhanced intelligence capabilities, and stronger partnerships with regional and international allies to keep Kenya ahead of emerging threats.
“As government and citizens, our collective duty is to ensure that every soldier is trained, equipped, supported, and honoured,” Ruto said, urging Kenyans to stand firmly behind the KDF.
“You are the shield and sword of our Republic. You carry the hopes of generations, the pride of our people, and the dignity of our flag.”
Ruto also honored the soldiers who have died in the line of duty saying they paid the ultimate price, defending the borders, securing communities from the threat of terrorism.
“Their memory is forever etched in the conscience of our Republic,” he said.
“We owe an unending debt of gratitude to them and to their families, whose sacrifice continues to inspire our nation’s resolve.”
He expressed the government’s commitment to honouring their service through devoted care and support for their dependants.
