At least four suspects were found dead after they were
separately lynched by mobs over claims they were thieves in parts of Machakos
and Nyamira Counties.
Police said they had opened a murder probe into the incidents.
Police warned that those found to have participated in the fatal attack of the
suspects will face murder charges.
The first incident happened in Mlolongo area, Machakos
County, where two suspects were stoned to death by a mob.
The police said they were called and informed that two people were being stoned by a mob over claims they were thieves, and rushed
to the scene on October 9, 2025.
The mob dispersed on noticing police were approaching the
scene.
Police said they found the two men had serious head injuries
and rushed them to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending identification
and autopsy, police said.
In Kebirigo, Nyamira County, two men were stoned to death in
Kianyabongere village over claims they had vandalized Kenya Power cables.
The deceased were identified as Jones Osoro, 25, and Fred
Matasi, 35.
They were stoned to death and their bodies set on fire,
police said.
Police said the two were accused of vandalizing the power
cables, which were meant to do the Last Mile Power Connectivity in the area.
Assorted cables were found at the scene, police said.
The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and
probe.
Police discourage mob lynching and want suspects to be
surrendered to authorities for processing and possible prosecution.
Cases of mob lynching have been on the rise amid efforts to
address the menace.
Police say they are
pursuing all reported cases with an aim of preferring murder charges on the
suspects as part of efforts to contain the trend.
Other pundits contend the incidents happen because of the
feeling of a lack of police action in villages and urban areas.
Police have in the past charged those caught for such
incidents with murder.
Elsewhere in Cherengany, Trans Nzoia County, one Amos
Kipruto, 32, was found dead under a tree.
This was after he was beaten up by some locals over claims
of being a thief. He was accused of stealing three sacks of maize from his
uncle.
He went to his house and slept before a relative removed him
to bask in the sun on October 9, 2025. The relative placed him under a tree
where he succumbed to the injuries.
Police were called and moved the body to the mortuary
pending autopsy and other procedures.
Police said the search for the assailants is ongoing.
