President William Ruto has led Kenyans in marking the 2025 Mazingira Day with tree planting activities at State House, Nairobi.
The national day, observed annually on October 10, is dedicated to promoting environmental conservation and awareness across the country.
Accompanied by First Lady Rachel Ruto, school children and senior government officials, including Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, the President joined pupils in planting trees within the State House compound.
He urged Kenyans to embrace tree planting as a personal responsibility and contribute to the country’s reforestation efforts.
The President further appealed to Kenyans to extend the spirit of Mazingira Day by visiting schools they once attended and contributing through tree planting.
He said schools provide a vital platform for nurturing a culture of environmental stewardship among young learners, noting that involving children in such initiatives will instill lifelong values of conservation and responsibility.
The Head of State emphasised that the government is prioritising the restoration of degraded ecosystems and water catchment areas as part of a broader strategy to mitigate climate change.
“We are reforesting all the areas that had initially been deforested for one reason or another,” Ruto said.
“We have agreed to focus on sensitive areas such as watersheds and water catchments to ensure trees are planted where they matter most. Trees are vital to the environment of our republic, and climate change is a reality we must confront.”
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to achieving Kenya’s ambitious target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
