Two suspects arrested for allegedly possesing elephant tusks in Samburu

National Police Service officers on Sunday arrested suspects for allegedly possessing elephant tusks in Samburu Central.

Acting on intelligence, NPS officers from Samburu Central collaborated with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers.

They arrested two suspects in Maralal Town after they were allegedly found to be in possession of seven pieces of elephant tusks.

The elephant tusks were weighing approximately 11.33 kg with an estimated street value of Sh1.1 million, which were concealed inside a bag. 

NPS said a red Boxer motorbike was also recovered and held as an exhibit. 

“The duo are in police custody pending arraignment in court. The National Police Service appreciates the continued close collaboration and cooperation of other government institutions in maintaining law and order,” the service said in a statement.

On September 11, police arrested two suspects in drug trafficking bust at soko Mjinga.

The operation took place at Soko Mjinga along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

Acting on intelligence, officers intercepted a black Nissan X-Trail, which raised suspicion due to its irregular movements. The vehicle had two occupants on board.

The vehicle was escorted the car to Magumu Police Station for further inspection.

The officers conducted a thorough search and recovered several sacks filled with a dry, green substance believed to be narcotic drugs. 

"Upon a thorough search, officers recovered multiple sacks of the suspected narcotics," the police statement said.

The two suspects were immediately taken into custody and are currently awaiting further police action, including possible charges related to drug possession and trafficking.

"The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to combating the trade in narcotic drugs and calls on the public to continue supporting its operations by providing information."

On September 9, 2025, officers from Mtwapa Police Station in Kilifi County conducted an intelligence-led operation targeting drug traffickers and muggers in Kipapuro and Mzambarauni, on the outskirts of Mtwapa town.

During the crackdown, four suspects were arrested, and police recovered 55 rolls of cannabis. 

The suspects were taken to Mtwapa Police Station and the seized cannabis was secured at the same facility.

The National Police Service has commended the swift response of its officers and reiterated its ongoing commitment to dismantling drug networks operating within the country. 

Authorities appealed to the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to help curb the spread of illegal drugs.
