Thirteen
teams will battle it out this weekend in the Kings of Africa Federation of
African Universities Sports (FASU) in Rugby 7s and Tennis Slam at the United
States International University – Africa (USIU-A).
The two-day competition will feature hosts USIU-A, Daystar, Kisii, Kabarak, Maseno, Technical University of Mombasa, University of Eldoret, the University of Nairobi, Zimbabwe's Ezekiel Guti University, Uganda Christian University, Makerere and Busitema.
They will use the championships to prepare for next year’s FISU World
Universities Sevens championships to be held in South Africa.
USIU-A rugby
coach Tom Lagat, said: “Our target is to play in the finals. Being hosts, it’s
only logical that we go all the way.” He added: “I have a young and talented
team that is ready to conquer Africa.”
USIU-A skipped the National Sevens Circuit with Lagat saying it was strategic as they prepare for the 15s season, where they will feature in the KRU
Championship.
Kisii University’s games tutor, David Obungu, said: “The boys are hungry for the trophy. Last weekend, we narrowly lost the Bingwafest title in Siaya to Kisumu RFC Development side, but this time, we are going for the trophy.
He expects tough competition from the likes of Daystar, the University
of Nairobi, Makerere, and Guti.
At the same
time, the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Athletics Universities track and field meet will be staged at Bomet University in Bomet County.
Kisii’s Obungu said they will field a full-strength team for the championships.
“We
want to continue with our dominance at the varsity championships. We are a powerhouse,
and we must demonstrate that in the games,” said a Obungu.
