The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the arrest of one suspect linked to the brutal assault of a woman in Narok County, even as a manhunt for additional perpetrators continues.

In a statement issued on Friday, NPS spokesperson Mukhit Nyaga said police had acted swiftly after footage emerged on social media showing a woman being viciously attacked in Mbenge, Ngarite area of Narok Central Sub-County.

“The Service strongly condemns this egregious act, which constitutes gender-based violence, assault, and kidnapping. These are criminal acts punishable under Kenyan law,” the statement read.

According to the NPS, officers responded quickly to the scene, rescuing the survivor, who was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

An investigation was launched immediately, and a manhunt mounted.

“This led to the successful arrest of one suspect who has since been placed in custody pending arraignment in court,” Nyaga said.

Police have intensified efforts to track down the remaining suspects believed to have participated in the assault.

Nyaga called on the public to share any information that could lead to further arrests.

“We commend the public for providing crucial information that led to the arrest and appeal for more details to assist in bringing all perpetrators to justice,” the spokesperson added.

Members of the public can submit tips through the toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112, via WhatsApp on 0709 579 000, or by using the hashtag #FichuaKwaDCI on social media.

Nyaga reaffirmed the NPS’s commitment to upholding respect for human rights and protecting vulnerable groups.

“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms, and dignity, and will continue to be at the forefront in the fight against gender-based violence,” Nyaga said.

The video showed several men who appeared to be beating a woman lying on the ground with sticks as she cried out desperately.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation online, with many Kenyans calling for swift justice and tighter measures to curb violence against women.

Police have assured the public that all suspects in the Narok assault will be apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Condemning the incident, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo noted that it is not a cultural practice, rather an act of sexual violence, and “such conduct cannot be countenanced”.

She pointed out that the constitution guarantees individual autonomy and freedom of choice, and equally frowns upon harmful cultural practices that undermine human rights.

“We call upon the police to promptly identify and arrest the perpetrators of this aggravated act of violence,” she added.
