The National Assembly has officially honoured Team Kenya for its outstanding performance at the 20th Edition of the World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo, Japan.
In a formal communication to MP on Tuesday, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula recognised the athletes’ achievements, noting that several lawmakers had petitioned his office to ensure the House formally acknowledges what he described as a “stellar performance” by the national team.
“To this end, I wish to take this opportunity to recognise the exemplary performance of our athletes during the championships,” Wetang’ula told the House.
Kenya finished second overall globally and topped the African medal table, a remarkable feat that reaffirmed the country’s status as a global athletics powerhouse.
Team Kenya bagged a total of 11 medals—7 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze.
The Speaker singled out Lilian Odira and Emmanuel Wanyonyi for their record-breaking victories in the 800 metres events. Odira clinched gold in the women’s 800m with a championship record time of 1:54.62, while Wanyonyi claimed gold in the men’s event, also setting a championship record of 1:41.86.
“It is noteworthy that a number of exemplary performers made history in their disciplines,” Wetang’ula remarked.
Beyond athletics, the Speaker also extended his appreciation to all Kenyan sportsmen and women competing across disciplines, crediting their efforts for inspiring national pride and unity.
“As I commend their superlative performances, Honourable Members, I also wish to laud all other gallant sportsmen and women for flying our flag high and inspiring patriotism through other major sports competitions,” he said.
He concluded his statement with a message of collective
national pride.
“On my own behalf, that of the House, and indeed on behalf of the whole country, I wish to congratulate Team Kenya on its participation in the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo and recognise their historic achievement in the global arena.”
“This is no mean feat, and we celebrate their excellence, tenacity, and dedication that has not only brought glory to Kenya but also cemented our national pride as a powerhouse in athletics,” the Speaker added.
