A 12-year-old boy died by suicide in his room in Muvau location, Makueni County, on September 17, 2025.
Police said they received a report from the area chief, and officers from Makueni Police Station, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and scene-of-crime personnel visited the site under the supervision of the station OCS.
According to police, the boy was found lying on a mattress on the floor of his room.
His father told police that after lunch at about 1:30 p.m., the boy went to his room, saying he wanted to do homework.
“When I went to check on him at around 3:00 p.m., I found him with a wire around his neck,” he said, adding that he tried to rescue him, but the child had already died.
Police noted there were no visible injuries on the body.
The scene was documented, and the body was moved to a private mortuary pending a post-mortem.
In a separate incident in Nyahururu, a woman died by suicide at her parents’ homestead on September 17.
Police reported that her husband, Dickson Mugwe Njeri, made the report. He told officers that the deceased had previously attempted suicide on September 9 by ingesting a chemical substance, but was treated in hospital and discharged.
He added that on September 14, she left home for her grandmother’s house but returned two days later. On September 17, she went to her parents’ home, where her body was later discovered on a tree by a casual labourer.
Police documented the scene and moved the body to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
According to the Ministry of Health, suicide is among the three leading causes of death globally, with an estimated 703,000 people dying each year.
The World Health Organization estimates that Kenya records about four suicide deaths daily, with a crude rate of 6.1 per 100,000 people and an age-standardised rate of 11.0 per 100,000 people.
