The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has sent a message of condolence following the death of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, describing him as a “distinguished jurist” whose work left an indelible mark on Kenya’s legal landscape.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago,” said Director of Public Prosecutions Renson M. Ingonga in a statement released on behalf of the ODPP.
He extended “heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary on this profound loss.”
Justice Andago’s “invaluable contributions to the development of Kenya’s jurisprudence, particularly in the area of Criminal Law, will remain an enduring legacy,” the DPP noted.
He hailed the judge’s “deeply reasoned judgments” for shaping legal practice, strengthening the rule of law, and inspiring generations of legal minds across the country.
Before joining the Court of Appeal, Justice Andago served as a High Court judge, where he earned “immense respect for his integrity, diligence, and steadfast commitment to justice.”
Ingonga also highlighted Andago’s dedication to alternative dispute resolution, saying, “Beyond his courtroom duties, Justice Andago was a passionate advocate of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.”
At the time of his death, he was Chairman of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, where he “led key reforms aimed at institutionalising mediation within the Judiciary, enhancing access to justice and promoting efficient resolution of disputes.”
“The passing is a profound loss not only to his family and colleagues but also to the Judiciary, the legal profession, and the nation as a whole,” Ingonga said.
The ODPP expressed solidarity with all who mourn the judge, adding, “May the Almighty grant his family and loved ones strength and comfort, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Ochieng's death was announced by Chief Justice Martha Koome describing him as a “towering figure” in Kenya’s legal landscape.
Koome further acknowledged Andago as a key contributor to the country’s commercial law jurisprudence.
In a statement, Koome, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), expressed deep condolences to Justice Andago’s family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary community.
