Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has said that President
William Ruto enjoys strong but silent support across the Mt Kenya region.
In a statement on Sunday, Mwaura dismissed claims that the
region had drifted away from the President, insisting that many of his
supporters prefer to remain quiet until the right time.
“Some leaders are in denial that President Ruto has many
silent admirers and supporters across the Mt Kenya region,” he said.
“His supporters are silent, many and scattered across
villages, waiting to show up at the ballot at the right time.”
He credited the President with reviving the economy, arguing
that the country was on its knees when Ruto took office.
Mwaura also warned the Opposition not to underestimate the
President’s popularity, insisting that they will be surprised at how many votes
he will get in 2027.
“If Azimio could get the votes that they got in the region
in 2022, many people will be shocked at the numbers the President will get in
2027,” he said.
His sentiments come as the opposition claims to have taken
over the Mt Kenya region, with seeming strong support coming from the region.
This is even as President William Ruto marks his third year
in office, a tenure that has seen hard periods marred by youth led protests and
strong political and civil opposition.
Mwaura has been vocal in calling out leaders underestimating
what the President has done for the country.
In August, the government Spokesman criticised political
leaders who wish President William Ruto’s agenda and the nation’s progress
fail.
He also condemned those who speak negatively about Kenya
while abroad.
“Wishing our president and country to fail, speaking ill of
our nation abroad, and backing Harambee Stars' success halfheartedly, is
unpatriotic,” Mwaura said in a statement posted on X.
“We are one country, one nation, one people. Let’s rise
above petty parochial and political differences.”
