President William Ruto on Saturday lauded teachers as “Kenya’s greatest resource and patriots,” vowing to keep education at the centre of his administration’s agenda.
Speaking at State House, Nairobi, after meeting more than 10,000 teachers drawn from across the country, Ruto credited educators for “spending extra hours shaping the destiny of our children,” adding that the nation is indebted to their service.
The President outlined key gains in the sector over the past three years, noting that the education budget has risen from Sh540 billion to Sh702 billion—“the largest increase in our history.”
He said the government had also addressed concerns surrounding the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), ensuring a smoother transition for learners and schools.

To ease the teacher–student ratio, Ruto announced that the government has hired 76,000 teachers and will push the number to 100,000 by January.
He highlighted infrastructure milestones, including the construction of 23,000 classrooms and the establishment of the Open University of Kenya.
The President also cited the new student-centred higher education funding model, which channels resources directly to learners while boosting support for universities and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions.
Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to “produce a more competent workforce to drive our transformation,” saying continued investment in teachers and education infrastructure is critical to the country’s long-term growth.
