Most Kenyans want police held responsible for extra-judicial killings and abductions – Tifa

Findings released on Thursday show that 35 per cent of respondents attributed responsibility to security agencies.

Most Kenyans believe police and other security agencies should be held accountable for extra-judicial killings and abductions in the country, according to a survey by Tifa.

Findings released on Thursday show that 35 per cent of respondents attributed responsibility to security agencies.

This view was shared across political lines, with 36 per cent of government supporters and 37 per cent of those opposed to the government expressing similar opinions.

The survey further revealed that 30 per cent of Kenyans were uncertain about who should take responsibility.

According to the report, six per cent were government supporters while 19 per cent were opposed to the administration.

Another 15 per cent of respondents attributed responsibility to what the report described as “state operatives and hired groups.” A further three per cent pointed to “unknown people,” while two per cent cited “terrorists and criminal groups.”

The survey was conducted between August 23 and September 3, 2025, using a nationally representative sample of 2,023 respondents across nine zones: Central Rift, Coast, Lower Eastern, Mt Kenya, Nairobi, Northern, Nyanza, South Rift, and Western.

Interviews were carried out face-to-face, mainly in Kiswahili and English. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 2.17 per cent.
