A school in Homa Bay County is at crossroads after the administration block and several classrooms collapsed on Friday.
The management of Koyore Comprehensive School in Kochia Ward, Homa Bay have now sent an appeal for help to restore the vital infrastructures that also housed the staff room and offices critical in the operation of the institution.
At the time of the incident, six teachers who were in the staff room narrowly escaped death, when the building caved in.
The school head teacher Joshua Ganda said no one was injured during the incident, though cause of the sudden collapse of the building was yet to be established.
According the witnesses, the block came tumbling down, soon after they heard some creaking sounds, before they scampered to safety.
The head teacher said the school incurred damages whose value is yet to established.
"We are waiting for officials from the Department of Public Works to come and assess value of the damaged property,” he said.
The destruction has forced the school to keep the office materials in one of the classrooms used by grade six pupils, while the affected pupils and teachers are now operating under trees.
"We salvaged a lot of equipment, which cannot be left in an open space. We are now using the classroom for grade six pupils to keep them,” Ganda said.
He expressed concerns that the incident had interfered with their academic programmes.
He called on government agencies and well-wishers to intervene and construct for them an administration block.
The teacher also appealed to the county government of Homa Bay to construct for them Early Childhood Development Education classrooms.
"We are appealing to the national government, and the County Government of Homa Bay to intervene and support us in construction of the administration block and new classrooms for the school,” Ganda said.
It is widely suspected that the walls of the collapsed building could have been weakened by heavy rains that had pounded the area on the material day, accompanied by strong winds.
