Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has reaffirmed the unity of the Opposition.

Gachagua asserted that the coalition remains firmly on course in its mission to remove President William Ruto from office in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a church service at PCEA Miharati Parish in Kipipiri Constituency, Nyandarua County, Gachagua assured Kenyans that the opposition alliance will remain cohesive and focused, and will front a single presidential candidate to challenge Ruto at the ballot.

“The Opposition remains united and committed to the goal of rescuing this country. We will present one strong presidential candidate,” Gachagua said, urging Nyandarua residents to support whoever is picked to carry the coalition’s flag.

Addressing internal concerns within the Opposition, Gachagua responded to remarks by DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, who questioned the appointment of Dr Mukhisa Kituyi as chair of the United Opposition Secretariat.

Gachagua defended the choice, noting the need to balance youthful leadership with seasoned experience.

“While it’s vital to include young leaders, we also need seasoned voices to guide the team,” he said, assuring that more young leaders will be integrated into the secretariat to ensure an energetic and visionary front.

Several national and local leaders accompanied the former DP, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo, Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto, Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru, and Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara, among others.

Gachagua’s remarks come amid growing criticism from President Ruto’s allies in Ukambani, who have dismissed the Opposition’s ability to mount a credible challenge in 2027.

Led by UDA National Organising Secretary and Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya, the leaders claimed the Opposition is being disjointed and riddled with internal conflicts, pointing to disputes surrounding the appointment of Dr. Kituyi as evidence of disunity.

“They cannot agree among themselves on very simple things. What will happen when it comes to picking a flag bearer?” Kawaya posed during a boda boda empowerment drive in Mbooni, Makueni County.

Other leaders, including Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda, Kangundo MP Fabian Kyule, and Kitui South MP Rachel Nyamai, echoed the sentiment, urging the Kamba community to rally behind President Ruto, whom they predict will win re-election with ease.

“They are already fighting over small positions. How will they agree on a presidential candidate?” asked Mutinda.
