Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday visited the family of late former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel in Ongata Rongai.
The former DP condoled with the family following the death of Lempurkel on August 24, 2025.
He was involved in an accident where he sustained serious injuries in the crash and had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.
In a statement on X, Gachagua prayed for peace and for God to grant his family courage during the difficult moment.
“This afternoon, in Ongata Rongai, I condoled with the family of the late MP of Laikipia North Hon. Mathew Lempurkel who passed on a few days ago after a tragic road accident,” he said.
"Once again, I pass my deepest sympathies to the family and people of Laikipia North on the loss of Hon. Lempurkel. I pray to Almighty God to Rest the Soul of Lempurkel.”
MP Lempurkel served in the 11th Parliament between 2013 and 2017 after being elected on an ODM ticket.
During his tenure, he positioned himself as a defender of the Maa community and a vocal figure in national politics.

His time in Parliament was, however, cut short in the 2017 election when he lost his seat to Jubilee Party’s Sarah Korere.
Before entering politics, Lempurkel made his mark through humanitarian work.
Lempurkel initially stuck with ODM before moving to UDA and later aligning himself with the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), which was launched by Gachagua.
