Police in Ruiru on Wednesday evening rescued a man from an angry mob in Gacagi Trading Centre, Gatongora, after he was accused of taking part in a violent robbery.

According to a police report, officers on patrol heard loud screams from residents and rushed to the scene, where they found a man being beaten by members of the public.

“The officers responded immediately and found a suspect being subjected to mob injustice,” the statement read.

Residents claimed the man had been part of a gang involved in a robbery with violence. His accomplices managed to escape, leaving him behind.

A quick intervention by the police saved the suspect from serious injuries. Officers recovered a homemade firearm with one round of ammunition from him, strengthening suspicions of his involvement in the crime.

“The firearm and ammunition were seized as evidence,” the National Police Service said, adding that a manhunt has been launched for the other suspects who fled the scene.

The injured suspect was taken to the police station before being transferred to the hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed he will be arraigned in court to face charges of robbery with violence and possession of an illegal firearm once discharged.

Police used the incident to caution against rising cases of mob justice, warning that such acts often obstruct investigations and put innocent lives at risk.

“The public is urged to report crimes through lawful channels and allow the justice system to take its course,” the police said.
