Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu alias Baba Yao is set to appear before the High Court today as proceedings inch forward in his graft appeal, following his release on bond after nearly six months behind bars.
Waititu secured his freedom on July 31 after nearly six months in jail, when Justice Lucy Njuguna granted him a Sh53 million bond backed by a bank guarantee.
The bond was issued as he pursues an appeal against his conviction in a Sh588 million corruption case dating back to his tenure as county boss.
The former governor was found guilty in February 2025 of a conflict of interest linked to road construction tenders in Kiambu and handed a 12-year sentence or a fine of Sh52.5 million.
He was also barred from holding public office for seven years.
His wife, Susan Ndung’u, was convicted alongside him and given the option of a Sh500,000 fine or a one-year jail term.
Their co-accused, two directors of Testimony Enterprises Limited, the company at the centre of the tender, were also sentenced.
Charles Chege was handed a nine-year prison term or a Sh295 million fine, while Beth Wangeci was fined Sh1 million or serve one year in jail.
The court convicted them on graft-related charges but acquitted them on three counts of money laundering.
Today’s mention is expected to chart the way forward, with the court set to issue directions on how the case will proceed.
