The government is investing billions of shillings in
development projects across Northeastern Kenya to uplift communities that have
faced marginalization for decades.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the President William Ruto
administration has placed the region among its top priorities, with initiatives
covering Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Marsabit, and Isiolo counties.
Speaking on Saturday during the Mandera East Constituency
Economic Empowerment program in Elwak, Kindiki assured residents that the
region will no longer lag behind in national development.
“North Eastern has been marginalized for a long time, but
President Ruto has said every part of Kenya must be treated equally. If we are
rolling out projects in Nairobi, we must do the same in Coast, Nyanza, Rift
Valley, Central, and here in North Eastern,” he said.
He also presided over similar engagements in Lafey and
Wajir.
The Deputy President emphasized that all regions deserve
equitable development and access to national resources.
He noted that infrastructure projects already underway
include road construction, electricity connections, modern markets, and
affordable housing.
Markets are being built in Elwak, Banisa, Lafey, Kotulo, and
Mandera towns, alongside housing projects across the region.

In the energy sector, a hybrid electricity program is taking
shape, with one plant nearing completion in Elwak and others in Eldas, Merti,
and Habaswein.
Garissa is also hosting a major solar power project.
“Norteastern is part of Kenya, and we will develop it
because the people here deserve projects just like everywhere else,” Kindiki
said.
The government is also undertaking the largest road project
in Kenya’s history in the region. The 750-kilometre
Isiolo–Modogashe–Wajir–Tarbaj–Kotulo–Rhamu–Mandera road, worth Sh100 billion,
is being built by seven contractors working on 11 different sections.
The Lamu–Ijara–Garissa–Isiolo road is also under
construction, expected to boost trade and open up the region for economic
growth.
On citizenship, the Deputy President revealed that the
government had ended discriminatory practices in the issuance of national IDs.
He said the new process is uniform and fair for all
citizens.
“President Ruto will go down in history as the first President to abolish discrimination in ID issuance. That is why we believe he must continue to lead our country for two terms,” Kindiki stated.
