The Media Council of Kenya has joined the media fraternity in mourning the death of veteran investigative journalist Kurgat Maridany.

In a condolence message, the Council described Maridany as a dedicated professional who practised journalism with integrity, curiosity and a steadfast commitment to truth.

“The Media Council of Kenya joins the family, friends and entire media fraternity in mourning the passing of Kurgat Maridany, a veteran investigative journalist,” the statement read.

Until his death, Mr Maridany was the Editor-in-Chief of Kajiado News Update. He had previously worked with several leading media houses, including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Daily Nation, The Star, Kenya Times, and The Standard.

Before joining the media, Maridany served in government as a senior librarian in charge of the Garissa Area Library, a position he held for 11 years.

The Media Council noted that his long career left an indelible mark on journalism in Kenya. “He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to journalism, which he practised with integrity, curiosity and a steadfast commitment to truth,” the Council said.

Colleagues and friends described him as a passionate storyteller who connected easily with people. His warmth and professionalism earned him respect across newsrooms and beyond.

“His passion for storytelling and his warmth towards everyone he encountered left a lasting impression,” the statement added.

The Council expressed its solidarity with Maridany’s family, saying his passing was a great loss not only to them but also to the entire media fraternity in Kenya.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the Council said.

Maridany’s career spanned decades, during which he shaped stories and inspired younger journalists through his commitment to the craft.
