Harambee Stars’ fairytale run at the Pamoja CHAN came to a heartbreaking end on Friday night, following a 4-3 loss to Madagascar in a penalty shootout at Kasarani Stadium.

Despite the painful exit, the team leaves the tournament with its head held high. Leaders from across the political divide and fans alike celebrated the Stars for their grit, unity, and the hope they inspired across the nation.

President William Ruto led the tributes, praising the players for their courage and determination.

“We had a remarkable run. Harambee Stars have silenced doubters, lifted the spirit of a nation, and reminded us that when Kenyans play with courage, confidence, and determination, nothing is impossible,” Ruto said.

“Yes, we bowed out at the quarter-finals — but we fought valiantly to the very end. To lose in the lottery of penalties is no dishonour; to push the contest to such a finish is itself a badge of greatness. We congratulate Madagascar on their victory. Yet throughout this tournament, our boys displayed resilience, grit, and an indomitable will. Every Kenyan is proud of you. You have united the country, given us moments of joy, and lifted our hopes.”

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi echoed the Head of State’s sentiments, describing the run as inspiring despite the heartbreaking conclusion.

“We bow out with pride. The Harambee Stars fought bravely, and though the journey ends here, the dream lives on. The future is bright,” Mudavadi noted.

Other senior leaders also lauded the team’s efforts. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen pointed to the unity the team had sparked across the country.

“We have had a great run in this tournament, and I’m deeply grateful to our team for showing us what great determination and grit can achieve. Going all the way to the quarters at our first appearance in CHAN shows the great potential we have to do even more. Viva Kenya!”

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale stressed that the team had reminded Kenyans of the deeper values of sport.

“Their spirited performance reminds us of unity, perseverance and courage. Kenya stands tall behind its team. Congratulations Harambee Stars, always our champions.”

Kirinyaga Governor and Council of Governors chairperson Anne Waiguru also sent her encouragement, praising the team’s resilience.

“Penalties may not have gone our way, but you played with true Kenyan spirit. Proud of you,” she wrote.

Although the loss to Madagascar ended Kenya’s hopes of advancing to the semi-finals, the Stars’ performance was hailed nationwide as a statement of potential and progress. For many Kenyans, the campaign will be remembered not for its ending, but for the moments of pride and unity it inspired.
