Tragedy struck in Tassia, Nairobi, on Sunday evening after a seven-month-old baby girl was killed in a house fire.
Police said the child was under the care of her aunt when the fire broke out at around 8 pm on Sunday, August 17. Household items were reduced to ashes as neighbours rushed to help contain the blaze.
Three other people in the house were rescued by locals, but the infant could not be saved. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
The baby’s remains were taken to the mortuary as investigations continue.
In a separate incident the same night, a fire swept through Jangwani Village in Mathare Area 4, killing one person and leaving widespread destruction.
More than 45 homes were razed, displacing dozens of families.
Two children who sustained severe burns were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
Residents accused local authorities of abandoning them in the aftermath of the disaster and appealed for urgent assistance to rebuild their shelters. Police confirmed they are probing the incident.
Meanwhile, in Kisumu, police are holding a woman accused of attacking her husband with boiling oil during a domestic dispute. The incident occurred on Sunday morning at Green Gate Estate in Maseno.
The man suffered serious burns on his face and chest but is reported to be in stable condition in the hospital. Police said the suspect, who is the victim’s wife, will be charged with attempted murder.
According to police, domestic violence cases are rising sharply, with at least four incidents being reported daily. Some end in severe injuries, while others turn fatal. Investigations into the latest cases are ongoing.
