Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua has officially declared he will take a shot at the governor's seat in the 2027 election, joining the bulging field of contenders.

On Saturday, he became the first aspirant for the Kitui gubernatorial seat to hold a ceremony to formally declare his candidature at a rally at Kyondoni Primary School grounds in Kitui West subcounty.

“This is the day that the Lord has made for me to set the record straight; to tell the truth to the people of Kitui county and all Kenyans,” Wambua told a cheering crowd of supporters.

Other leaders, who have shown interest in the seat include former Governor Charity Ngilu, Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu, Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu and Safaricom official Nicholas Mulila.

At the ceremony attended by ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna and Wiper Patriotic Front party leaders, Wambua said he was confident of winning.

“I have decided to seek the support of the people of Kitui county in the next general election to be held on August 10, 2027, to serve you as your governor of Kitui county,” he said.

As he declared his candidature, Wambua said he was buoyed by performance as a two-term senator after various pollsters rated him among the top performing leaders in Kenya.

He said his leadership acumen had also been recognised in the Senate, where he served as deputy minority leader and he had the  full backing of his Wiper Democratic Front.

The senator, however, claimed some leaders in Kitui were obsessed with telling lies about his leadership in a bid to confuse the people of Kitui for cheap political gain.

He said he has served with utmost dedication.

Wambua said despite declaring his interest in the county top seat, he will continue serving the people to the best of his capacity. He said he would not launch his campaign until August 10, 2026.

“Those in positions of leadership should work. It is two years to the polls. They should not have the excuse that they failed to perform because they were undermined by me. No, they have two years to serve the people. Let them serve their mandate,” Wambua said.

He said the Saturday event was not a campaign launch but only a declaration of his intention.

“We have not launched our campaign. That is yet to come. This is  just a small event. We will call a mighty event to launch the mother of all campaigns on August 10, 2026,” the senator said.
