Part of the recovered land in Mombasa County/HANDOUT
The Kenya Railways has welcomed the ongoing efforts by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission ( EACC) to help) recover land fraudulently taken by conniving land cartels.
This is after the commission, working closely with the corporation, successfully recovered a parcel of public land valued at Sh50 million in Mombasa.
The land had reportedly been irregularly transferred from the Kenya Railways Corporation to a private developer over a decade ago.
A 2013 reports had linked some state agency officials and officers from the local authority for coordinating the land allocation without consent from Kenya Railways.
Following investigations by EACC, a recovery suit was filed in July 2020 at the Environment and Land Court in Mombasa.
The matter was resolved through an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process, leading to a consent agreement adopted by Justice Stephen Kibunja.
Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga has welcomed the move, noting that the corporation will continue working with investigative agencies to recover any land that may have been irregularly allocated.
" This is a big win for us and the Kenyan people because this is public land that we must protect. We are going to support all recovery processes" Mainga said.
EACC lauded the recovery as a significant win in the ongoing effort to reclaim grabbed public assets and urged individuals or entities holding such properties to voluntarily surrender them for their rightful public use.
