The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry has appointed Edward Maina Muriuki as the Acting Director of Meteorological Services at the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).
Muriuki takes over the leadership following the retirement of Dr. David Gikungu on July 28, 2025.
His appointment was confirmed by the Principal Secretary, State Department of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno.
A seasoned meteorologist, Muriuki brings with him over three decades of experience in both technical and administrative roles within the department.
He joined KMD in 1991 and has since served in various capacities, including Senior Assistant Director, Deputy Director for Technical and Support Services, and Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting Services.
He also served as principal of the World Meteorological Organization/Regional Training Centre at the Institute for Meteorological Training and Research in Nairobi.
“This appointment marks a significant milestone in my career as a meteorologist, and I look forward to enhancing the science of Meteorology and Hydrology in Kenya,” Muriuki said following his appointment.
“I look forward to working closely with all our staff at KMD as well as our partners to improve weather and climate service delivery in the country.”
Muriuki holds a Master of Science degree in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrology, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Meteorology from the University of Nairobi.
His appointment comes at a time when accurate and timely weather and climate information is increasingly critical.
The department is expected to play a key role in supporting the global call for the implementation of the "Early Warning for All" initiative in Kenya.
With his extensive background, Mr. Muriuki is expected to steer the department toward improved delivery of meteorological and hydrological services.
His leadership will be instrumental in ensuring the safety of life, protection of property, and conservation of the environment.
The ministry congratulated Muriuki on his appointment.
