Missing Kenyan activist Mwambili Mwagodi has finally been
found after his whereabouts remained unknown for days.
According to Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid, Mwagodi is
currently with officials from his office and lobby group Muhuri Kenya and has
been rushed to hospital for a checkup.
“Mwabili has been released and is presently with our @VOCALAfrica_and
@MUHURIkenya officers in Mombasa.
“Presently, Mwabili has been rushed to Pandya Hospital,
Mombasa, for a quick medical checkup, after which he will be put on a flight to
Nairobi to reunite with his family,” he said.
Hussein explained that Mwagodi was dropped in a bush in
Kinondo, Kwale County, at around 3am, where he walked for about 3 km to Diani.
It is in Diani where he managed to call his family, who then
alerted Vocal Africa, who sent their officers to pick him up.
“While in Diani, Mwabili voluntarily took himself to the
police station, but to everyone’s surprise, the police wanted to detain him. Our
officers intervened, and he was released.”
The Kenyan
activist working in Tanzania was allegedly abducted.
According
to his sister Isabella Kituri, Mwabili went missing while in the
neighboring country.
She said
efforts to file a missing person's report by the employer were denied by
Tanzanian police.
“We are
unable to reach him. His employer went to file a missing person's report this
evening but was told to wait until it is 24 hours," Kituri said.
’Family has confirmed that Mwabili Mwagodi, who is a Kenyan activist and was vocal
against church donations, was abducted in Tanzania on Wednesday,’’ Kituri added.
The family of Mwabili Mwagodi on Saturday called on both
Kenyan and Tanzanian authorities to urgently account for his whereabouts, four
days after his alleged abduction in Tanzania.
Mwagodi, a Kenyan activist critical of church‑linked
political fundraising, was reportedly seized on the night of Wednesday, July
23, around 10 pm in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam.
Witnesses said he was walking with his driver near Amani
Beach Hotel, where he works, when a vehicle intercepted them.
Armed men are said to have bundled him into the vehicle and
sped off.
The family previously said his car was left behind
after the alleged abduction.
His phone went off shortly after, and no contact has been
made since.
CCTV footage from the area was reportedly confiscated by
Tanzanian authorities, frustrating efforts to trace him.
