Kisumu has secured a Sh10.6 billion investment under the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation (LVWATSAN) programme to expand and modernise water and sanitation services across the city and its outskirts.
The project, funded by various partners and managed by the City of Kisumu, is being implemented by the Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO).
It is expected to provide clean water to an additional 25,000 households and connect 1,700 more to the sewerage network.
Kisumu Governor Anyang'' Nyong'o hailed the project as a transformative step in addressing long-standing water and sanitation challenges in the region.
"This is a game-changer for water and sanitation in Kisumu City and Maseno," Nyong'o said.
“The programme will bring crucial upgrades to thousands of homes.”
The LVWATSAN programme will also ensure that 4,968 affordable housing units in Lumumba, Makasembo, and the proposed Lake Victoria Marina at Otonglo are fully connected to both water supply and sewerage infrastructure.
In addition to expanding access, the project aims to improve the efficiency of water delivery by reducing water loss, a move that is expected to improve KIWASCO’s financial stability.
“LVWATSAN also focuses on reducing water loss to 28 per cent to boost KIWASCO’s financial stability and strengthen key institutions,” the governor noted.
However, Nyong’o acknowledged hurdles facing the implementation, particularly community resistance to a proposed sewerage treatment plant at Otonglo, which has delayed crucial feasibility studies.
“Community resistance to the proposed Sewerage Treatment Plant at Otonglo has unfortunately delayed crucial studies,” he said.
On Friday, Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Muga inspected ongoing works under the programme.
During the visit, he officially handed over a jet flush truck and non-revenue water management equipment to KIWASCO to support the project’s implementation.
The LVWATSAN programme is part of a broader effort to improve urban infrastructure and living conditions in Kisumu County.
