Security agencies are hunting down a robbery with violence suspect who escaped from Kibera Law Courts in Nairobi on Wednesday.

The suspect identified as Alex Kibisu, 29, was in remand pending hearing and determination of his case.

He had been brought from Kamiti remand to the court for a defence hearing of his case of 2023 when he slipped off and jumped over a perimeter wall, escaping with handcuffs on.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon as he was being escorted from court number three, police and prison officials said.

He is said to have jumped the perimeter wall at the court and vanished into the sprawling slum amid a hunt for him.

Police said he had been staying in Satelite in Nairobi, but comes from Kakamega, and that all concerned parties had been alerted to help in tracing him.

Nairobi police boss George Seda urged the public or those who know him to alert police if and when seen.

Kibisu, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence at Kamiti Prison for violent robbery charges, was in court facing an additional charge relating to a 2023 armed robbery in Lang’ata, where he allegedly shot and injured a victim during a mugging incident.

Kibisu had been convicted of robbery with violence and was sentenced to serve a life sentence.

He appealed and the sentence of death imposed was substituted with a sentence of 20 years imprisonment on each count.

The sentences were to run concurrently from December 11, 2023.

On Wednesday, he was appearing in court for a hearing of another robbery with violence case in Court Three when he escaped.

Meanwhile, a bodaboda rider was rushed to hospital with serious wounds he sustained during a robbery incident in Muungano area, Athi River.

The victim was attacked by two pillion passengers he had carried to Zebra area on Thursday morning.

Police said the attackers escaped with the motorcycle in the drama.

The rider sustained injuries on the head and was rushed to hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.

A hunt on the attackers is ongoing amid fears the motorcycle might have been sold elsewhere.
