A section of MPs from the Mt Kenya region have now issued a strong statement demanding thorough investigations into the chaos that led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

The lawmakers who spoke after a meeting in Naivasha said those directly responsible for the violence must be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

“There can be no sacred cows. Kenya is a democracy governed by the rule of law, no one is above it,” they declared.

According to the MPs, the sponsors and orchestrators must be unmasked.

The over 40 MPs under the banner of the Mount Kenya Parliamentary Caucus pointed fingers at “reckless, selfish politics” for the mayhem, singling out targeted attacks on key economic facilities in the region.

They warned that the destruction of enterprises that employ young people and sustain families is not only short-sighted but a betrayal of the region’s future.

“For goodness’ sake, why would anyone incite the burning of enterprises that feed our families? Such heinous sabotage only tears down our own house.”

At the heart of their message was also a resolute defense of Mt Kenya’s political freedom and autonomy.

The MPs dismissed attempts to intimidate or pressure the region into political realignments, emphasising that the community has a constitutional right to associate with whoever they deem fit.

“We assert categorically that our community, like all Kenyans, has the right to belong to any political association. We have chosen to work with the current government for the sake of unity and development.”

The caucus made it clear that they would not allow the region to be boxed into ethnic political cocoons, affirming their commitment to partnerships that serve the broader national interest.

“We are free citizens in a free country. No amount of intimidation will force us into surrendering our freedom. The Mountain is open for partnerships with all who are ready to build Kenya.”

They also called for unity, urging the public to reject the politics of fear and hate and instead focus on rebuilding lives and safeguarding national peace.

“Kenya is ours to build, not to burn. When Mount Kenya stands united with the rest of the country, the whole nation becomes stronger.”
