The World Health Organization (WHO) has honoured former President Uhuru Kenyatta for his role in championing for a WHO Pandemic  Agreement.

The recognition follows the World Health Assembly's adoption of the agreement.

“His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya, The World Together, In recognition of your role in championing and advocating for the WHO Pandemic Agreement that was adopted by the seventy-eighth World Health Assembly,” the recognition reads.

Uhuru was President during the COVID-19 pandemic, and he ensured various measures were taken locally and internationally to ease the impact on multiple countries.

The WHO adopted the pandemic agreement in May 2025 to enhance global preparedness and response to future pandemics.

This agreement outlines principles, approaches, and tools for international coordination, including equitable access to vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

It addresses weaknesses exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as gaps in prevention, preparedness, and response arrangements, as well as challenges in funding and access to medical countermeasures.

The agreements represent a global commitment by WHO countries to work together, as an international community of sovereign nations.

The agreement was adopted after three years of negotiations.
