On the radar

The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) is set to deliver a comprehensive statement today, July 9, addressing the alarming rise in human rights violations—particularly against women—during recent anti-government protests.

The briefing, to be held at Ngong Hill Hotel along Ngong Road in Nairobi at 11.30 am, comes amid growing national and international concern over the use of excessive force, sexual violence, extrajudicial killings, and abductions during the civil unrest that has rocked the country in recent weeks.

According to human rights organisations, at least 14 women were raped during the anti-government demonstrations on June 25.

Usikimye, an organization that supports survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, reported that thirteen victims came forward for assistance, with eleven describing brutal gang rapes involving up to 11 perpetrators.

FIDA-Kenya’s address is expected to outline a series of legal, humanitarian, and policy actions the organisation will pursue in collaboration with stakeholders to safeguard women’s rights and hold perpetrators accountable.

The event also aims to amplify the voices of survivors and advocate for systemic reforms in law enforcement and justice systems.
