Kenya is marking Saba Saba Day under heightened security and widespread disruption in several towns.
By 1 PM, Nairobi’s CBD had come to a standstill. Businesses were closed, and pedestrian and motor traffic were minimal.
Police blocked key streets to prevent access.
In Mombasa, security forces stopped protesters from proceeding with planned demonstrations.
Running battles between police and protesters are ongoing in Kitengela and Githurai.
Residents have been urged to avoid these areas for their safety.
At Ngara, police fired teargas earlier in the day.
Minutes before 2 PM, a group of boda boda riders was arrested at the Globe Roundabout in Nairobi. Police accused them of attempting to sneak people into the Central Business District (CBD).

The riders and their motorcycles were bundled into a police lorry as part of intensified security operations across the city.
Authorities suspect some riders tried to bypass roadblocks to ferry individuals into the restricted zone.
Even as protests flare up in several areas, Kisumu remains calm, with residents holding peaceful processions calling for national unity.
In Kangemi, tension persists. Youths were seen engaging police in running battles on deserted streets.
In Narok, tension is high in and around the CBD with a heavy presence of security agents.
In Eldoret, there is also a heavy presence of security agents, with most businesses remaining closed, while in Nakuru, most businesses remain closed.
In Wote, Karatina and Mwea, protesters engaged police in running battles.
As protests continued, crowds gathered and swelled rapidly in Kamkunji.
Some of those gathered can be seen with buttons and claim to be protecting their businesses.
ODM leader Raila Odinga is expected to address the gathering at 3 PM.
Protests were also reported in Machakos earlier in the day.
Security agencies remain on high alert as the situation continues to unfold.
