Police in Eldoret have heightened security across the town as fears over Saba Saba protests kept most streets in the central business district (CBD) deserted on Monday.

In Uasin Gishu County, courts and other public offices remained shut after employees were advised to stay away for their safety. Traders also kept their shops closed, with security guards stationed outside premises within the CBD.

County askaris and anti-riot police officers patrolled strategic locations, while roadblocks were erected on major routes leading into the town.

Lorries ferrying security personnel were spotted heading to areas like Huruma, Kipkaren, Kamukunji and Maili Nne estates, which witnessed intense demonstrations during previous Gen Z protests.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi said no incidents had been reported so far but assured residents that his officers remain vigilant.

“We still urge everyone to keep peace so that daily activities can go on,” Mwanthi said, adding that any lawlessness would not be tolerated.

Some parents kept their children at home as schools in Eldoret failed to resume classes. Meanwhile, additional security teams from other parts of the region were reportedly deployed to reinforce local officers.

One trader, Paul Kiptoo, said he would monitor the situation before deciding to open his mobile phone shop.

“We hope the situation will remain calm and that there will be no destructive protests like last time,” he said.

The tightened security comes amid nationwide calls for demonstrations, as Gen Z-led protests continue to shape the country’s political discourse.
