Chaos erupted in Kitengela, Kajiado County, on Monday as protesters, mostly Gen Z youth, engaged police in running battles during the ongoing Saba Saba demonstrations.
Armed anti-riot police officers swung into action after the protesters took to the streets at around 10:00 am.
The youth blocked the Nairobi–Namanga Road, paralyzing transport along the highway, which had been flowing smoothly earlier in the morning.
They lit bonfires using tyres before police intervened.
Police are currently using tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Shops in Kitengela have remained closed as officers continue to engage the protesters.
The General Service Unit (GSU) has reinforced other police units to help manage the situation. Two anti-riot water cannons have also been deployed in Kitengela town.
Earlier in the day, more police officers were deployed, and roadblocks were set up at strategic points along Namanga Road.
The situation, however, remains calm in the neighbouring Athi River town in Machakos County, where business is continuing as usual.
