Former Chief Justice David Maraga has said his security team, which was withdrawn after he joined the June 25 protests, has been partially restored.
Speaking to KTN on Wednesday, Maraga disclosed that his driver has resumed duty, but one of his bodyguards is yet to return.
“They started with my driver and then the bodyguards, but they have restored the driver. One bodyguard is yet to come back,” Maraga said
Maraga noted that he was shocked to learn about the withdrawal of his security without any formal communication.
“I woke up and I am told by one of my people at home that they have picked the security at the gate and left, but that was restored yesterday (Tuesday),” he added.
He said the officers were told to report back to their bases and not return to his residence.
This development follows a letter that Maraga wrote to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on June 27, protesting the move.
In the letter, he linked the recall of his police detail to his participation in a peaceful march in Nairobi commemorating victims of the 2024 anti-finance bill protests.
“On June 25, the day I joined the youth and families of the victims who died and those who went missing, one of the officers attached to me was asked not to report for duty,” Maraga stated.
By the following morning, June 26, he stated that his entire security team had been recalled without consultation or prior notice.
While protesting the withdrawal, Maraga reminded authorities that retired Chief Justices are entitled to security under the law and demanded complete restoration of his protection.
“I wish to remind the leadership of the police and the
Ministry of Interior and National Administration that the security arrangements
and other facilitation by the National Police Service are benefits guaranteed
under the Constitution and the law. It is on this basis that I demand for the
immediate restoration of my security,” he concluded.
