The National Police Service in Laikipia West Sub-County on June 30, 2025, successfully recovered 68 sheep that had been reported stolen from multiple households across the area.

The recovery followed swift intervention and effective information-sharing between security agencies and residents.

“Timely sharing of information and community involvement made it possible to track and recover the animals swiftly,” NPS stated.

The livestock were officially handed back to their owners during a ceremony attended by key local officials, including Laikipia West Deputy County Commissioner Barasa Wafula, Sub-County Police Commander Francis Ng’ang’a, and Administration Police Service Sub-County Police Commander, Chief Inspector Veronica.

The livestock owners commended the collaborative efforts of the police, National Government Administration Officers and community elders.

In a separate incident, the NPS on Monday handed over recovered livestock to Ugandan authorities at the Nawontos border point in Oropoi Division, Turkana West.

The handover was led by Turkana West Deputy County Commissioner Orache Kennedy and Sub-County Police Commander Peter Wahome.

“The recovered animals included 30 cows, 13 goats, and three donkeys,” NPS said in a statement.

The handover was followed by a peace dialogue between representatives of the Turkana and Karamojong communities aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence and enhancing cross-border cooperation.

NPS officers reaffirmed their commitment to serving and protecting communities, particularly in areas affected by cross-border tensions and livestock theft.

This operation followed a report by Ugandan authorities on June 27, indicating that individuals from the Turkana region had allegedly crossed into Uganda and driven livestock back into Kenya.

In response, the NPS mobilised officers who blocked escape routes and launched a pursuit.

According to the NPS, officers caught up with the suspects, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

Although the suspects escaped, the livestock was recovered without harm.

Earlier, on June 21, a multi-agency security team recovered 59 stolen animals following a livestock theft incident in Samburu County.

The operation, conducted in the Marti area, involved personnel from the NPS, General Service Unit, and National Police Reservists.

According to the NPS, the officers responded promptly after livestock was reportedly driven away from a herdsman in the Nchalai area of Angata, Nanyuki.

The suspects, reported to be armed, were intercepted by the security team, prompting an exchange of fire.

The officers managed to rescue the herdsman and recover all the stolen livestock, which has since been returned to the rightful owner.
