The date coincides with a planned nationwide protest by Kenya’s Gen Z population in remembrance of the youth killed during last year’s anti-government demonstrations.
Gachagua is leading the opposition leaders in pushing for the protests to reportedly pile pressure on the government to stop extra-judicial killings.
In a viral social media campaign, influential bloggers have been circulating event posters featuring images of senior opposition figures, including Gachagua, Martha Karua, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, ex-Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, and Kalonzo Musyoka.
According to the misleading posters, the event is allegedly set to take place at the Windsor Golf and Country Club, with South African opposition leader Julius Malema reportedly slated to attend.'
On Monday, June 23, 2025, DCP flagged the posters as fake, following an online uproar and speculation that the purported launch was intended to overshadow the Gen Z protests.
"Fake news alert,'' DCP captioned the deep fake posters on its official X account.
The DCP had earlier postponed its official launch, which was initially scheduled for June 3, 2025, after Sports Kenya cancelled the party’s booking of the Kasarani Indoor Arena Auditorium, citing prior commitments and preparations for the upcoming CHAN 2025 tournament.
In a letter dated May 21, 2025, Sports Kenya Acting Director General Gabriel Komora stated that the facility was unavailable and advised the party to look for an alternative venue.
“We regret to inform you that the venue will not be available due to prior bookings by sports teams. We are also not taking further bookings due to preparations for the upcoming Championships for African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025) to be hosted within the complex,” read the letter.
“Kindly consider looking for an alternative venue. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your interest in utilising the facility.”
In response, DCP condemned the cancellation, calling it “an affront to democracy” and accusing the government of attempting to frustrate the party’s launch.
“The indefinite venue cancellation by Sports Kenya is an affront to democracy and an attempt to deter the DCP party launch by the government. The Kasarani Gymnasium Facility (Indoor Arena Auditorium) is a public facility that every Kenyan has a right to access and utilise for the public good,” the party’s Secretary General, Hezron Obaga, said in a statement.
The party has since confirmed that it is scouting for alternative venues and remains committed to launching within the year.
