A coalition of Christian organisations will on Sunday, June 22, hold an interdenominational memorial service at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi to honour lives lost during the anti-government protests of June 25, 2024.

The service, themed “Lest We Forget” and drawn from Habakkuk 1:2–4, has been organised by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), the Kenya Christians Professional Fellowship (KCPF), and the National Association of Youth Workers Networks (NAYNET).

In a joint statement addressed to city church leaders, NCCK said the gathering is intended to reflect on the journey the nation and church have taken since the protests, to offer prayers and comfort to bereaved families, and to inspire hope among Kenya’s youth.

“Following a reflection, consultation and building concurrence in the last couple of weeks, we resolved to jointly convene this service with the objective of honouring the lives lost during the protests of June 25, 2024... and rekindling hope among our youth for a better tomorrow through prayer, testimonies, and creative arts,” read the statement signed by Rev Canon Chris Kinyanjui of NCCK and Rev Kepha Nyandega of EAK.

The service will run from 3pm to 5pm, featuring youth-led worship, memorial tributes for victims of past injustices, and a name-reading ceremony.

Senior clergy will play a supportive role, with the liturgy also incorporating a call to action for the Church to remain engaged in justice, discipleship, and trauma healing.

The memorial comes ahead of a planned commemoration on Wednesday, June 25, by Gen Z activists, civil society groups, and opposition leaders, who have called for nationwide remembrance events to mark one year since the deadly protests over tax hikes and governance concerns.

Organisers of the church service urged congregations to attend in person or participate online, using the hashtag #LestWeForgetJune25 to show solidarity.

Congregants have been asked to wear white shirts/tops and carry the Kenyan flag.

“Your physical presence and online engagement will underscore our unity in Christ and commitment to guiding the nation,” the statement read.

The events are expected to reignite national conversation on youth activism, state accountability, and the role of the Church in Kenya’s sociopolitical landscape.
