The Kenya Coalition of Church Alliances and Ministries (KCCAM) has made three demands to the government over the death of teacher Albert Ojwang.

In a statement on Sunday, KCCAM’s executive board urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to speed up its investigation into Ojwang’s death and other unresolved cases.

“To IPOA, expedite investigations into the death of Albert Ojwang as well as other unclear deaths of young people and ensure all culpable officers face the law,” the alliance said.

The Church also called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure officers across the country allow peaceful demonstrations to proceed without interference.

“At the same time, we appeal for vigilance against infiltration of the protests by violent elements who are bent on chaos and destruction of public property,” the statement added.

KCCAM further called on President William Ruto to take a lead role in affirming that the mandate of security agencies is to protect Kenyans.

It said Ojwang’s death, along with other reported cases of excessive force, has affected public trust in security institutions.

“We appeal to you in a heavy heart, as fear and anxiety are increasingly taking root across the country due to the growing perception of police brutality," they said.

“We note your statement on Ojwang's killing and ask you to assure the nation of swift and just accountability and instil visible measures to reform the security sector in line with the values enshrined in our Constitution.”

The Church expressed concern that the incident, public outrage, and resulting unrest have contributed to heightened political tension in the country.

Ojwang died while in police custody under circumstances that remain unclear.

His death sparked protests, particularly in Nairobi, with demonstrators demanding answers.

The incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his detention and death.
