Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula Thursday hosted the High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Kenya Ibrar Hussain Khan at his office at Parliament Buildings.
Wetangula was briefed on the current status of the India-Pakistan conflict along the international borders.
The Speaker of the National Assembly was joined by representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Steve Apopo, Director of the Speaker’s Office.
Khan noted that while a ceasefire is in place, tensions remain high and the situation fragile.
‘’I emphasised the need for restraint and urged all parties to pursue peaceful and diplomatic solutions,’’ Wetangula said.
He added that Pakistan is a key trade partner for Kenya, particularly as our largest importer of tea, and any escalation could significantly affect our economy.
The speaker expressed concern about the human cost of war, especially on vulnerable populations who often bear the greatest burden in times of conflict.
"Pakistan remains a strategic trade partner to Kenya, particularly as our largest importer of tea. Any escalation of hostilities in the region could have far-reaching economic implications for both countries and the global community," he said.
Wetang'ula, however, noted that he was encouraged by the steps being taken by both nations toward de-escalation and dialogue
