National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has directed the House Security Committee to table a report on the status of Juja MP George Koimburi next week.

At the same time, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has called for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to record a statement with the police regarding his claims about Koimburi's condition.

Ichung’wah said the committee's chairperson, Gabriel Tongoyo, must obtain a written statement from Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on the investigations into Gachagua’s allegations, including doctors' reports.

“The IG must tell us what investigations he has conducted, including obtaining a statement from Rigathi Gachagua, who seemed to know more about the incident than the victim himself regarding the alleged inhalation of dangerous gases,” Ichung’wah said.

The Kikuyu MP added that Gachagua should disclose what he knows about Koimburi’s condition, especially since he claimed the Juja MP had inhaled a poisonous substance.

“It is important we establish the facts so that in future no one makes baseless claims, particularly on serious matters like kidnappings and abductions, for political gain,” Ichung’wah added, urging the police to investigate Gachagua’s statements.

“Tongoyo must provide us with an update from the police and the medical doctors attending to the so-called victims,” he said.

Speaker Wetang’ula directed the committee to obtain statements from IG Kanja and the hospital treating Koimburi and table a comprehensive report before the House next Wednesday.

“As the custodian of the interests of all Members, including Hon. Koimburi, I direct Hon. Tongoyo to present a full report next Wednesday regarding our colleague who has not reported to the House since his disappearance and reappearance,” Wetang’ula said.

He noted that the report would help the House understand what is happening with the Juja MP, adding that further discussion on Koimburi’s conduct without a substantive motion would violate House Standing Orders.

However, Tongoyo cautioned that obtaining statements from Koimburi and the medical facility may not be easy.

“It will be an uphill task, especially in getting a statement from the doctor, because I don’t have the authority to compel him to disclose information. We went there and were denied access,” Tongoyo told the House.

Speaking at the hospital on Monday, May 26, 2025, Gachagua claimed the MP has lost his voice and is currently unable to speak.

He stated that doctors informed Koimburi’s family the loss of voice was due to a chemical allegedly injected into his body during his abduction.

“He was abducted in full view of church members by a squad that also attempted to harm his wife. His whereabouts were unknown until Monday morning, when he was discovered at a coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Githunguri Constituency,” Gachagua stated.

“He was found badly beaten and tortured, and unable to speak. Doctors have confirmed Koimburi was subjected to torture and sustained serious soft tissue injuries, which they say appear to be inflicted by professionals. A chemical was administered through inhalation, and it has affected his vocal cords. The doctors have assured us that they are doing everything to ensure he is out of danger.”
