Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called on political leaders to steer clear of early campaigning and concentrate on delivering development promises to Kenyans.

Speaking during a groundbreaking event for the construction of Othaya Stadium in Nyeri county, Kindiki emphasised the need for elected officials to prioritise service delivery over political posturing.

“Let’s halt early campaign talk and channel our energy into improving the lives of our people,” he said, addressing a crowd of national and county officials.

The stadium’s construction follows a pledge made by President William Ruto during a development tour of the region in April.

Contractors at the site committed to completing the facility within four months.

Kindiki reiterated the government’s commitment to reviving the economy and improving key sectors such as coffee, tea, and dairy, while working to stabilise fuel prices and the exchange rate.

He announced that Nyeri County will benefit from Sh1.45 billion allocated to the Last Mile electricity programme, as well as new markets, housing projects, and improved road infrastructure.

Kindiki also confirmed that the previously stalled Ruring’u Stadium project — delayed due to pending bills totalling KSh 138 million — has now been revived under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Paying tribute to the leadership of the late President Mwai Kibaki, Kindiki urged humility and cooperation among leaders.

“We must lead with respect and avoid unnecessary conflict, regardless of rank,” he said.

"Leaders must respect colleagues and collaborate without confrontation—regardless of position."

His remarks appeared to be a veiled response to recent comments by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who had criticised Mt Kenya leaders aligned with President Ruto and issued political threats against them.

Among those present were Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports) and Alex Wachira (Energy), Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, area MP Duncan Mathenge, and other local officials.
