The Regional Commissioner for Rift Valley, Abdi Mohamed, convened a high-level security meeting at the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) sub-centre in Marigat, Baringo county, as part of efforts to restore peace and stability in the troubled North Rift region.
The strategic forum provided a platform to assess the effectiveness of ongoing operations and coordinate future security measures, particularly in response to persistent challenges such as cattle rustling and banditry.
Discussions at the meeting emphasised the need for enhanced synergy, coordination, and communication among the various security agencies operating in the region.
Mohamed stressed the importance of unified inter-agency collaboration, describing it as critical to closing escape routes commonly used by cattle rustlers and ensuring rapid, coordinated responses to emerging threats.
“Modern security challenges demand a shift toward technology-driven operations,” he said.
He urged all security units to adopt advanced tools such as drone surveillance, real-time data integration, and secure digital communication platforms to improve intelligence gathering and operational efficiency.
“I call on all security agencies to make optimal use of available resources to reduce operational costs while maintaining effectiveness,” Mohamed added.
He also highlighted the need to integrate community development initiatives, such as irrigation schemes, borehole construction, education promotion, and youth empowerment, into long-term peace-building strategies for conflict-prone areas.
The meeting brought together senior security officials, including members of the Baringo County Security and Intelligence Committee, officers from the Kenya Defence Forces and commanders of units under the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu.
Representing OMU Commander Brigadier Joel Arimi, Major Felix Makenzi called on sub-county security teams to hold regular forums involving National Police Reservists (NPRs), county security personnel, chiefs, and community representatives.
According to Makenzi, such forums would help detect threats early and enhance local vigilance.
At the end of the meeting, all attending security chiefs pledged full support for the mission.
They commended field commanders and officers for their dedication and bravery in confronting criminal gangs and banditry, which continue to undermine peace and development in the North Rift.
