The move is
seen as a response to the united front formed by President William Ruto and
former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, both of whom support Sakaja’s re-election.
As part of laying the groundwork for the anticipated showdown, former Farmers Party leader Irungu Nyakera held talks with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka at the SKM Command Centre on Monday, May 26, 2025.
Nyakera has become a key figure in the coalition led by Kalonzo and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“Today I met with H.E. Kalonzo Musyoka to discuss issues affecting Nairobi County and national interests—particularly the senseless killings of clergy and the abductions of Gen Z,” Nyakera posted on his X account.
“Asante sana, Your Excellency, for promising to keep mentoring young leaders.”
Kalonzo also confirmed the meeting in a post on his X account, saying it was vital in addressing issues concerning Nairobi.
“Today I met with Irungu Nyakera, former PS and Nairobi 2027 gubernatorial candidate, at the SKM Command Centre, Nairobi,” Kalonzo stated.
“We discussed a number of pertinent issues affecting Nairobi County and our shared vision to unlock its full potential. We also deliberated at length on the state of the nation, particularly the harassment and intimidation of politicians and human rights activists by state security.”
Kalonzo added that Nyakera, who also serves as the DCP Party patron for Nairobi, was accompanied by Farmers Party Secretary General Simon Kamangu, Kevin Malinga, and John Wambugu.
“I am happy to continue mentoring young progressive leaders,” he said.
The meeting is seen as part of broader opposition consultations aimed at solidifying plans to capture the Nairobi Governor’s seat in 2027.
Gachagua has previously vowed that they will ensure Sakaja is not re-elected in 2027, despite the governor enjoying support from both Ruto and Raila.
The Ruto-Raila alliance is seen to command a solid voting bloc that could give the opposition a run for its money in the battle to control Nairobi.
