Turkana targets 4,000 households in livestock restocking initiative
The restocking will take place at 20 sites in the county
ANITRAC is designed to create a centralised and reliable source for animal identification, registration, traceability, and tracking
In Summary
The Animal Identification and Traceability (ANITRAC) system has been officially unveiled, paving the way for its trial phase ahead of the long-anticipated national rollout.
The launch took place at the Kabete Efficacy Trial Centre, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to enhance livestock management and ensure food safety.
Spearheaded by the Directorate of Veterinary Services, the initiative aims to revolutionise the way animals are identified, tracked, and managed across the country.
The pilot phase of the program will be implemented in six government farms, serving as a testbed before a nationwide rollout.
ANITRAC is designed to create a centralised and reliable source for animal identification, registration, traceability, and tracking.
“The programme aims at providing a single source of animal identification, registration, traceability and tracking,” said a statement from the Directorate.
According to officials, the system will also ensure the safety of animal products, boost consumer confidence, and enhance the country’s disease control and prevention capabilities.
By providing real-time data on animal movement and health status, ANITRAC is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of livestock management practices and support livestock commercialisation efforts.
"The launch of ANITRAC is a transformative step for the agricultural and livestock sectors. It will help us monitor animal health, trace the origin of animal products, and quickly respond to disease outbreaks," said an official from the Directorate.
The government hopes that once fully operational, the system will support international trade by aligning with global standards for animal product traceability.
Stakeholders in the livestock value chain, including farmers, veterinary officers, and traders, are expected to benefit from increased transparency and streamlined operations.
The introduction of ANITRAC is aligned with President William Ruto’s commitment to modernising the sector through technology and data-driven approaches.
