A 28-year-old man was
arrested after he illegally exhumed the body of his late father in a village in
Soy, Uasin Gishu County.
The casket belonged to his
father, who was identified as Stephen Rono, who died and was buried in 2020.
The son is said to have armed
himself with a jembe and shovel and gone to the gravesite and started to dig out
the body on May 21.
Locals raised an alarm after
they realised he had reached where the coffin was and wanted to remove it.
Police say they were called
to the scene by a mob that had surrounded the man as he went on with his
business.
It is not clear what his
motive was.
According to police, they
found the suspect sitting on the gravesite after he had dug the body out and
wanted to remove it.
He was arrested and taken
away from the scene for interrogation.
Police explained it is a
criminal offence to interfere with the grave of a body.
The grave was refilled and covered
amid ongoing investigations. Police want to make an application in court to
hold the suspect pending investigations, which will include psychiatric tests.
Meanwhile, police are
searching for an assailant in connection with a murder probe of a 57-year-old
man in a quarrel in Kiiri village in Gaku, Muranga County.
The deceased, identified as
Samuel Kamau Kinyanjui, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after the May
21 incident.
This is after he sustained
head injuries following a confrontation with the assailant.
Police and witnesses said the
victim and assailant are relatives and neighbours and had quarrelled before they
went physical.
The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he
succumbed to the injuries, police said.
According to police, they are
looking for the assailant who vanished from the village since then.
