Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has come to the aid of a one-and-a-half-year-old baby whose mother died in the tragic fire incident in Mathare.

The tragic fire occurred on Monday morning, killing at least five people and leaving four others nursing serious injuries.

Sonko said that the mother attempted to save her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, baby Wesny, by throwing her from the 2nd floor, resulting in the child sustaining severe injuries to her eye.

“Last evening, around 5:30 p.m., relatives and neighbours of this family had to walk all the way from Mathare to our headquarters to reach out to me for assistance,” Sonko narrated.

“I met baby Wesny, who seemed to be in severe pain. Her left eye was swollen. We immediately took action and rushed her to Lions First Eye Hospital, where she was examined and treated by doctors.”

In an update, Sonko said that unfortunately, the mother did not survive the incident, and the father could not walk due to the serious injuries he sustained.

Sonko added that the baby was breastfeeding, and his team provided them with sufficient milk, pampers, and foodstuffs to sustain them for a few days as he works on further assistance.

He condoled with those who lost their loved ones and wished a quick recovery to the injured.

“I wish all those injured in this incident a quick recovery. May the Almighty God rest the souls of all those who lost their lives in this sad fire incident in eternal peace,” Sonko said.

According to Nairobi police boss George Sedah, at least eight houses were flattened by the fire. He said the fire broke out from one of the iron sheet structures before it spread rapidly to others.

It took the arrival of fire engines from the military and the Nairobi County Government to contain the spread of the fire.
