Radio Africa Group has honoured one of its own, award-winning journalist Damaris Kiilu, in a joyful celebration that recognised her outstanding achievements and contributions to journalism.
Damaris, a senior writer and sub-editor at The Star Digital, was celebrated following her win in the Sports Reporting Category at the 2025 Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA).
Her impactful story featured a woman living with disability who is excelling in the sports industry—an inspiring piece that highlighted the values of inclusion and human interest that define her work.
Speaking during the Wednesday event, Radio Africa Group CEO Martin Khafafa commended Damaris and encouraged the rest of the team to maintain the momentum.
“Congratulations, Damaris, for making Radio Africa proud. And to the rest of the team, let’s continue putting in the effort and raising the bar,” Khafafa said.

Digital Editor Francis Mureithi lauded Damaris and the entire digital desk team, noting that her achievement reflects the team’s collective effort and commitment to excellence.
“Damaris, congratulations. We are very proud of you. I don’t have much to say today, but I want to honour a promise I once made, that we would celebrate every positive milestone,” he said.
“So yes, we’re having a small but meaningful celebration. It’s not just about the cake. It’s about what the award represents: hard work, excellence, and a deep commitment to quality journalism.”
Damaris expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support she has received throughout her career.
“I am truly honoured and grateful for the support I have received so far. I want to thank my colleagues and my bosses, Editorial Director Paul Ilado, Digital Editor Francis Mureithi, and his deputy Nancy Agutu, for their overwhelming support, encouragement, and guidance,” she said.
“I also want to thank the company for celebrating me. It can only get better.”
Mureithi also highlighted the success of The Star’s digital desk at the AJEA, which saw two team members, Damaris Kiilu and Bosco Marita, nominated.
“I’m proud to share that The Star Digital Desk received two nominations at the Media Council of Kenya’s Journalism Excellence Awards—a testament to the incredible work being done by our team,” he noted.
“This also highlights the diversity within our storytelling. To the entire team: we are one team, one effort, one success. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of digital journalism.”
