The total number of Malaria cases recorded in health facilities in Kenya decreased by 672,889, accounting for 17.8 per cent in 2024, a report has found.

According to the Economic Survey, in the year 2023, malaria was rampant, accounting for 4,453,015.

“Under a lot of initiatives put in place in 2024, with an aim of accelerating the fight against the malaria and promoting a more equitable global response, the cases declined from 4,453,015 to 3,780,126,” the report reads in part.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), global malaria programme, unveiled a new operational strategy for 2024-2030.

It emphasises the development of norms and standards, new tools and strategic information use.

Kenya made significant strides in implementing malaria control and elimination strategies to curb malaria.

In 2024, Kenya focused on multiple interventions, including distributing long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), conducting Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) in specific counties and implementing Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) in targeted areas.

The National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) worked with the State Department of Public Health and professional standards to combat malaria in Kenya.

According to the Ministry of Health (MOH’s) report, the NMCP distributed 15.3 million LLINs to 27 million people in 22 counties, including Kisumu, Kisii and Migori.

Similarly, on April 30, 2024, MOH noted that IRS was successfully implemented in Busia and Migori counties, supported by the President's Malaria Initiative.

“Last year, IRS efforts conducted covered 95% of targeted structures, achieving high coverage rates in Migori, Busia and Homabay counties.

On April 25, 2024, Kisumu county recorded an improvement in the fight against malaria, with a prevalence standing at 15.6 per cent, Governor Anyang Nyong'o said.

He said the improvement was because of the implementation of various preventive and treatment strategies in the county.

Nyong'o said that in the early 2000s, the malaria burden exceeded 50 per cent prevalence.

Kisumu is situated within the malaria Lake Endemic Zone, where the prevalence of the disease exceeds 15 per cent.
